Students Spoke Up... and We Listened

Thank you for being part of the League of Education Voters (LEV) community!

In case you missed the Youth Advocacy Summit & Fall Fest on October 8th co-designed with students and in partnership with Community Center for Education Results (CCER) featuring an inspiring lineup of student leaders, valuable workshops, a student-led panel discussion with Washington state Senator Claire Wilson and Seattle Public Schools Board of Directors Vice President Liza Rankin, and the first public appearance of 2024 Washington state Teacher of the Year Blaire Penryyou can watch videos here.

Special thanks to our sponsors Microsoft, College Spark Washington, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Also, the LEV Field Team has wrapped up their statewide group and individual interviews to engage students, parents, educators, and community leaders in co-designing our 2024 Legislative Platform. The LEV Policy Team is now reviewing the statewide interview content and will draft our Platform, which we plan to announce next month. As we did last year, we will circle back with community members to ensure their voices were heard.

Network for EdWork Annual Convening Call for Proposals Is Open

TAF’s Network for EdWork Annual Convening is happening February 23-24, 2024 at the University of Washington HUB, and the Call for Proposals is OPEN! This year’s theme is Journey Towards Liberation. Submit your talk, panel, workshop, interactive performance, or activity for consideration. The Convening is open to educators who identify as BIPOC and all leaders in education.

What is the Network for EdWork?

TAF’s Network for EdWork develops collaborative partnerships with and among districts, schools, higher education, nonprofits, and government to close gaps in recruitment, encourage retention, develop internal and external competencies, and foster the promotion of BIPOC educators and education leaders to make those groups more representative of their student populations. We believe that supporting and connecting BIPOC educators and leaders is essential to creating education spaces where students of color - and all students - thrive.

LEVinar Recording: Lifesaving Skills – Youth Suicide Prevention Through Social-Emotional Learning

Social-emotional learning is a powerful and cost-effective intervention to equip young individuals with essential skills tied to protective factors that play a pivotal role in reducing the likelihood of developing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. In this timely webinar, we share the impacts of social-emotional learning on youth suicide prevention and discuss possible pathways forward for Washington state to address this ongoing crisis.

Special thanks to Committee for Children and the Washington state Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC).

We truly appreciate all you do for Washington students. Each one of us has the right to feel safe and valued.

Sincerely,
Arik
