Tell legislators to give Washington schools the tools they need to support the needs of the whole child, and pass House Bills 2816 and 1182.
Students from Summit Atlas Public School
The best learning happens when schools are equipped to support the whole child. And when you tell legislators that student supports matter, they listen.
Earlier this session, together we sent over 5,500 emails to legislators about the importance of safe and supportive school environments by asking them to pass Representative Chris Corry’s (R-14) House Bill 2816 out of the House, and they heard our call. Now it’s time to speak up again.
Two pieces of legislation that have recently moved into the Senate chamber would make significant progress in creating safe and supportive school climates. Representative Chris Corry’s (R-14) House Bill 2816 would create a model policy for schools building positive school climates across the state. In addition, House Bill 1182, introduced by Representative Sharon Tomiko Santos (D-37), would align the Learning Assistance Program with Washington’s Integrated Student Supports Protocol, a proven strategy for creating and sustaining responsive, supportive, and collaborative learning environments that target student academic, social-emotional, and behavioral health needs.
Safe and supportive school environments that center social-emotional learning alongside academics have led to better student-teacher relationships, decreased instances of violence and bullying, and higher academic achievement overall. And for many students experiencing trauma or other mental health needs, schools can be a critical first point of access in getting the services they need to thrive.
Children experience a greater sense of power and success when they are given the tools to navigate their growth as a student and as a whole person.
